Who was Odin?
Odin is one of the most important gods in the Edda, the main source of Norse mythology, which also forms a part of Germanic mythology. He is known as the Allfather, the chief of the gods, and rules over Asgard, the realm of the gods.
Odin is the god of wisdom, war, death, poetry, and magic. He is often described as a mysterious wanderer with one eye—he gave up the other in exchange for wisdom at Mimir’s well. Odin constantly seeks knowledge and is willing to make great sacrifices for it.
He rides an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir, carries a magical spear called Gungnir, and is accompanied by two ravens, Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory), who fly around the world and bring him information.
In the myths, Odin is also connected with the Valkyries and the Einherjar—the souls of fallen warriors who train in Valhalla for the final battle, Ragnarök, where Odin himself is fated to die.
