Design from those in early images of Sandown Pier on the Isle of Wight in the 1890’s. Their intention is to be attached in the center to horizontal railings on the back of benches, The backs of which curve slightly off of the pier allowing the pointed base of the lamps to hang down below the boardwalk. Gas powered, the pipe ran through the railings, allowing them & the benches to remain slightly warm and snow free in winter months.
