Perfect for use in games and simulation projects. The Junkers Ju86, is not a plane most people are familiar with but one that played a very interesting role in WWII. It was part of the highest altitude battle during the history of the war, at over 8 miles above the earth. Originally developed as an airliner for Lufthansa in 1934. It was pressed into service as a bomber, performing poorly during the Spanish Civil War.
The Ju86 - a low wing twin engine monoplane, it shared similar wings to the Junkers Ju52, and had a crew of 4. The Ju86 was one of the very first German types to serve in the British Commonwealth. South African Airways operated 18 of the older models; and at the outbreak of war, the Ju86 became pa. rt of the South African Air Force (SAAF), they operated as coastal patrol aircaft and later served with the SAAF as bombers in the east african campaign. The German Luftwaffe used them from day 1 !..in WWII. Used in action against Poland in 1939, some Ju86's were converted into the P variant, with a longer wingspan, pressurized cabin, just 2 crew members. The Ju86 P was designed to fly comfortably at the height of 39,000 ft (12,000 m) and could go higher !!...and therefore consequently usedfor photo-reconnaisance missions at altitudes were Allied fighters couldnt catch them. Later The Luftwaffe developed the Ju86 R-1 high altitude reconnaisance altitude plane, capable of cruising along at 50,000 ft (or 15,000 m) above the Earth, thats over 9.5 miles...that's considerably higher than commercial jet airliners cruise today. In short, the Junkers Ju 86 was the U-2 Spyplane of its day !
