Messerschmidt ME-262A1 Swallow was the worlds first operational jet fighter to see combat was a development of a twin jet design development process that started before WWII began. Initial development was difficult and delayed several times but ultimately successful. Engine problems and short supply of engine and aircraft parts and fuels caused further delays and reduced the production capability of the Germans to manufacture in large numbers. These began seeing service in combat in 1944 against the large formations of Allied Bombers then pounding Germany with escort fighters. The Me-262 was a huge leap forward for technology and almost impossible to counter with the best fighters in the Allied formations. However there were not enough to make any real difference in the outcome of the war.

At the end of the war, these aircraft were captured and confiscated by the British and Americans and used for testing and further development. The Me-262s led directly to the F-86 and many of the features found in the 262 were used in subsequent designs.
