The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a versatile, high-performance multirole fighter aircraft developed by General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) for the United States Air Force (USAF). First flown in 1974 and officially introduced into service in 1978, the F-16 was originally designed as a lightweight air superiority day fighter but has since evolved into one of the most widely used and capable multirole combat aircraft in the world. It is known for its exceptional agility, advanced avionics, and affordability, making it a favorite among both U.S. forces and more than 25 allied nations.
Powered by a single Pratt & Whitney F100 or General Electric F110 afterburning turbofan engine, the F-16 can reach speeds exceeding Mach 2 (over 1,500 mph / 2,414 km/h) at high altitude. It has a combat radius of approximately 340 miles (550 km) for typical missions and a ferry range of about 2,200 miles (3,500 km) with external fuel tanks. The aircraft is equipped with a wide range of weapons, including an internal M61 Vulcan 20mm cannon and up to 17,000 pounds (7,700 kg) of ordnance on nine external hardpoints. These can carry air-to-air missiles (like the AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-120 AMRAAM), air-to-ground missiles (like the AGM-65 Maverick), precision-guided bombs, and electronic warfare or targeting pods.
