DESCRIPTION

The MD-80 series are single-aisle, twin-jet, medium-range, commercial airliners in service all over the world

The Development of the MD-80 by the merged firms of McDonnell and Douglas Aircraft brought about first flight in 1980 for this popular airliner. It was a redesign of the popular DC-9 family of aircraft built by Douglas. This new aircraft could carry between 132 and 170 passengers 1500 plus miles making it comparable to the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. The MD-80 was an efficient, safe and reliable aircraft for its time and well liked by the crews. Many airlines flew or still fly the MD-80 series of airliners. The MD-80 was followed by the MD-87 and MD-90 series which were further developments of the MD-80. When McDonnell Douglas was purchased by Boeing, the MD-80 program was replaced with a further development of the aircraft called the Boeing 717. Production of these were a continuation of the MD-95 program and ceased in 2006. The DC-9 And its descendants had been in production since 1965, 41 years continuous production.
