3D model Selling Tips: Customer Friendly Description #2

Put yourself in the shoes of the customer. See, how little time he has to make a decision? The 3D model description should help the customer both get enough information and save his time.

In the previous post I pointed out some tricks on how to make 3D model description more friendly for SEO and more visible in Google. But bringing potential customer to your product is not enough to complete the sale. Good product description is the necessity in online sales. It's obvious that before you sell anything online you must make the customer trust you and your product.

Despite the excellent quality shown in the images, the client can only guess what’s inside the files. Many of you would like to think that your images of your product speak for themselves, but don’t forget there are many competing products that are not going to let you seize the buyer’s attention so easily.


- Put efforts into writing itself. Every time when the customer is choosing among similar competing products he might want to know which author is more reliable. And the first thing they do is looking how well the products are described. When the author writes just a few scattered words or doesn’t bother to write anything at all, he doesn’t just leave his product without that bonus value, but more likely downgrades his product in front of the customer. How many details are explained, grammar and even formatting shows your diligence and how serious you are about selling your 3D model.

- Use generic and quality related statements responsibly. Try to avoid quality praising words. Customers usually create an opinion about quality of the model from images. Notes like ‘Very high quality, realistic, detailed and anatomically accurate model of a cat’ are just ignored by clients, or worse – they might see you as being irresponsible. Use these descriptions only if you are certain or in specific cases if you really made some qualities of the model (for example if your character has excellent rig or very precise anatomy), which can be clearly visible in the images or you are experienced in specific areas.

- Be honest (objective). It is great and fast way to gain clients' trust. If you think there are some defects that you had no time to eliminate before publishing, don’t be afraid to note them. Maybe scene objects are not properly named or the model has only the front modeled in details. Details like these sometimes are not so important if the quality of your 3D model is pretty good. And being honest you will more likely to get customer's trust. On the other hand, if your model has defects that are not noticed in the description, client has the right to ask for the money refund.

- Make it short and informative. Uninformative and artificially bloated description can annoy and put off the customer. Like all of us, clients often don't have much time (who has it these days?) to read long descriptions. If you want to get customers sympathy try to save his time and point only the most important things, i.e. things that inform about your products exclusivity and what is not visible in the images. Discard any text that is obvious or might be useless to the client. Just think about potencial client when writing.

- Structure your description. Group the facts about your 3D model by technical topics (e.g. modeling, textures/shaders, animation, scene, etc.). It will help customer read through the description or find specific information more easily.

- Don’t duplicate information like tags, formats or attributes that are already shown on item page. Search engines ignore clearly duplicated words and it more annoys customers than helps them to find what they need. Remember, your goal is to elicit trust in customers, so don’t waste their time. Instead of duplicating the tags, better name all the parts of your 3D model in human language. Although tags may contain all the most important words about the model, they are so overused that customers often just ignore them.
