This tabletop sculpture is inspired by Samson Ndeikwila’s compelling account of Namibia’s arduous journey to independence—a narrative filled with courage, struggle, and sacrifice. The artwork features a uniquely carved figure of a native trumpet player, pierced with an arrow through the head, seated on a stable base shaped like the African continent.
The artist confronts the harsh, unsettling truths that accompanied the pursuit of freedom across many African nations. Dreams were shattered when distrust crept into the upper ranks of liberation movements, making even the bravest feel unsafe. Yet, many of those dreams remain alive and vivid today.
Through this distinctive piece, the artist underscores the importance of Africans telling their own stories—truthfully and while they are still here to do so. Sharing lived experiences helps bridge the gap for those who weren’t present, offering a deeper understanding of the past. By honoring the greatness of those who came before us, we are inspired to grow; and by acknowledging their mistakes, we are reminded not to repeat them.
