Developed in the late 1970s in the USSR, the K-51 grenade features a rigid plastic body with a metal bottom. The airtight body is filled with a powdered highly irritating non-lethal substance. The impact of the K-51 grenade is significantly greater compared to crowd control grenades, as it was designed for military and special forces use.Once the fuse ignites, a reaction occurs inside the grenade; the burning substance increases the pressure inside the body, causing the grenade's bottom to blow out, dispersing a cloud of chemical agent. An adversary caught in the aerosol cloud is unable to resist or engage in combat without a gas mask, as their hands reflexively move to their face to wipe their eyes. The respiratory tract is affected by coughing and wheezing, while nasal passages are filled with mucus.
