Description

Parts of the sword [1].
The sword is a kind of bladed weapon with a straight blade intended for a chopping blow or a chopping and piercing blow [2], in the broadest sense - the collective name of all long blade weapons with a straight blade.

In modern domestic historical weaponry, a narrower definition of the sword is adopted: offensive weapons with a double-edged straight blade more than 60 centimeters long, intended primarily for chopping blows. Weapons with single-edged straight blade refers to the swordsmen

Contact knife-piercing and chopping weapons with a straight middle or long massive two-blade blade [3].

However, in everyday life swords are often mistakenly attributed to various types of weapons with a curved blade, in particular - Japanese weapons, including katana and wakidzashi, attributed by the State Standard to two-handed swords (the Japanese themselves also clearly distinguish weapons with a direct double-edged sword - tsurugi , 剣 - from a katana type weapon, denoted by a hieroglyph 刀, which in different cases can be read in different ways), as well as weapons with a straight blade with a one-sided sharpening that applies to either sabers, or to combat knives, cutlasses and so on - in particular, the falshion. Such weapons as the sword and rapier are also sometimes referred to as swords, which is not entirely true - in the existing classification they stand out as independent types of cold weapons along with the sword, although they are related to it by their origin.

It should also be borne in mind that other languages adopt their own specific usage, which is different from that adopted in the domestic weapons tradition. In particular, in a number of languages, a slashing blade weapon with a straight and curved blade is not terminologically terminated, called a word, which in Russian is usually translated as a sword, but in fact can correspond in this context to other types of blade knives. And, for example, the English sword in a broad sense can mean both a one-sided sharpening weapon and a double-edged sword, both with a straight and curved blade - to specify the same type, the adjectives and prefixes (dress-sword - suit sword, that is, a light sword worn with a civil dress, a back-sword is a sword with a boot, "a one-blade, including a sword and a saber, and so on.
