However they proved to be complicated to maintain and not efficient enough for commercial service. The production of DC-4s was turned over to the military and 1100 C-54s and R5Ds were produced during the war.  Another 79 DC-4s were produced for the airlines after the war while many C-54s and R5Ds were returned to civilian commercial use.  These aircraft carried about 40 to 80 passengers and had a crusing speed of 227 mph.  It had a range of 4250 miles and a service ceiling of 22300 feet.
