When Captain Ebenezer Pierce offered Joshua Slocum a ship \"that wants some repairs\" in 1892, Slocum traveled to Fairhaven, Massachusetts, to find that the vessel was a rotting, derelict oyster sloop propped up in a field. What followed was one of the most remarkable acts of maritime restoration ever undertaken by a single individual. Slocum rebuilt and refitted the Spray over thirteen months between early 1893 and 1894, working in a seaside pasture at Fairhaven, replacing her rotted timbers, rebuilding her from the keel up, and making her ready for the open ocean. The total cost of materials came to just $553.62. On April 24, 1895, Slocum set sail from Boston Harbor alone, following a route that took him to Nova Scotia, the Azores, Gibraltar, South America, Samoa, Australia, and South Africa — navigating without a chronometer, relying instead on dead reckoning and noon-sun sightings for position, with nothing but a cheap tin clock to keep approximate time. He had sailed 46,000 miles in three years, two months, and two days when he ghosted into Newport, Rhode Island at 1 a.m. on June 27, 1898, becoming the first person in recorded history to circumnavigate the globe alone. One of the most remarkable qualities of the Spray was her ability to sail herself — due to the length of the sail plan relative to the hull and the long keel, the Spray was capable of self-steering, and Slocum balanced her stably on any course by adjusting the sails and lashing the helm fast — allowing him to sleep, cook, and read while she sailed on unattended across thousands of miles of open ocean. In 1900 Slocum published his account of the voyage, Sailing Alone Around the World, which became an immediate international success and remains one of the most celebrated works of maritime literature ever written. Slocum and the Spray disappeared and were never found after departing Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts on November 14, 1909, bound for the headwaters of the Orinoco River in Venezuela — a mystery that has captivated sailors and historians ever since. Our 3D printable model faithfully captures the Spray's iconic profile and character — the broad, shallow hull, the distinctive bowsprit, the gaff-rigged main, and the sturdy, purposeful form of a working boat that carried one man around the world and into history. Developed from historical plans and photographic references, this model is designed for builders who appreciate the deeper story behind the vessel they are putting together, piece by piece.\n\n3D printing settings\nThis model has been designed to be accessible on most standard FDM printers without any need for specialist equipment or exotic materials. All parts are sliced to fit comfortably on standard print beds, and the geometry has been optimized for clean, reliable printing in PLA or PETG without excessive support structures. The hull is split into manageable sections that align and bond cleanly, with integrated registration details at each joint to ensure accurate assembly without guesswork. We recommend printing hull sections in a warm off-white or cream-toned filament to best approximate the natural wood and weathered paint appearance of the original vessel, while the below-waterline sections print well in a dark antifouling tone. Rigging and mast components are designed as slender but printable elements — take your time with these on a well-tuned printer with a 0.4mm nozzle and slow the print speed down for the finest detail. For those who want to take the model further, the files scale cleanly to larger sizes, and a more generously sized print of the Spray makes for a beautifully detailed display piece with room to add fine thread rigging and hand-painted details. The complete model makes for a deeply rewarding build — not just as a scale modeling exercise, but as a small act of tribute to one of the most extraordinary voyages ever undertaken by a human being and the humble boat that carried him safely home.","imageAlt":"Spray Joshua Slocum Legendary Sloop That 3D print model 4","url":"https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-models/hobby-diy/robotics/spray-joshua-slocum-legendary-sloop-that-sailed-the-world-alone","isCLDApplicable":false,"isSaleOffApplicable":false,"gaAttributes":{},"primaryImage":{"gridFallbackUrl":"https://media.cgtrader.com/variants/dtsf96xiyzkhn1jizz5m301wmgo3/a26e47dab5f2d22c43d6c5ce4b4b46ecc30c70918878397cba1a10c1e35d7bfc/00.jpg","gridUrl":"https://media.cgtrader.com/variants/dtsf96xiyzkhn1jizz5m301wmgo3/78add9c2f02fbd73a43ffb3970be38683c5f15eff6ca849dc78c644f4ff9ce1b/00.webp","isAdultContent":false},"modelInfo":{"modelUrl":"https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-models/hobby-diy/robotics/spray-joshua-slocum-legendary-sloop-that-sailed-the-world-alone","isCgtVerified":false,"types":{"printReady":true,"animated":false,"pbr":false,"rigged":false,"lowPoly":false}},"metaverseFormatsList":[{"id":51,"name":".stl","is_native":false},{"id":129,"name":".3mf","is_native":false}],"categorySlug":"hobby-diy","subcategorySlug":"robotics","categoryTitle":"Hobby \u0026 DIY","subcategoryTitle":"RC \u0026 Robotics","schemaImageUrl":"https://img-new.cgtrader.com/items/7021815/01ca08a57b/spray-joshua-slocum-legendary-sloop-that-sailed-the-world-alone-3d-model-01ca08a57b.webp","saleOffDiscount":0,"eligibleForSubscription":false,"subscriptionSubscribed":false,"subscriptionPotential":false}},{"id":"5999782","type":"listingItem","attributes":{"id":5999782,"title":"HMS Amethyst Black Swan Sloop radio controlled working model","price":60.0,"description":"HMS Amethyst was a Black Swan Sloop built in WW2 but made famous by the Yangtse Incident in 1949 when she was fired upon on her journey up the Yangtse River to Nanking and subsequently grounded on a sand bank for some six weeks until she made her get away.\n\nThis model is based on the plans available in Les Brown's book the Black Swan Class Sloops and incorporates the modifications made to the ship before its service in the Far East. \n\nThe model is scaled to 1/48th scale making a model about 1600mm long and 205mm wide. If printed at 66% it would be scaled at 1/72nd scale and be about 1100mm long. However a model at this scale might need a little modification to the access hatches for motors and batteries.\n\nI have included a full instruction booklet with illustrations that is over 40 pages long, but if you find issues or problems I'm very happy to answer emails. There is a link to the instruction manual for free download at the end of this description.\n\nThe pictures show the model on the water. She sails very well indeed, a very stable model ballasted with batteries and about 3kg of lead sheeting and is quite capable in windy and pond rough conditions. She is twin screwed and has a good turning circle of about 3x her own length, but this would be greatly improved if twin speed controllers were used.\n\nI have printed her in PETG filament and she uses about 4 reels. Some fittings were printed using a resin printer - the gun director, the Oerlikon guns on the bridge wings and the Bofors guns, but all these could with care be printed with a good filamenbt printer too.\n\nThe printer used was a Creality K1 Max which has a maximum build plate of 300mm cubed. The maximum size of parts in the print is 220mm cubed except for the lattice mast, but I have included a two part mast as well for those with a smaller printer. I have been requested hull sections for printing with a smaller printer and I have now included these so that everything can be printed witha printer with an build area of 200mm cubed.\n\nShe has been a fun project to design, and a great model to sail. I hope you enjoy building her!\n\nIf you wish to look at the building instructions, here is a link to a free download so you can see what is involved https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-print-models/hobby-diy/robotics/hms-amethyst-black-swan-sloop-radio-controlled-instructions","imageAlt":"HMS Amethyst Black Swan Sloop radio controlled working 1","url":"https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-models/hobby-diy/robotics/hms-amethyst-black-swan-sloop-radio-controlled-working-model","isCLDApplicable":false,"isSaleOffApplicable":true,"gaAttributes":{},"primaryImage":{"gridFallbackUrl":"https://media.cgtrader.com/variants/mo1c9krqazid1y2wd3gwwtfhjoom/a26e47dab5f2d22c43d6c5ce4b4b46ecc30c70918878397cba1a10c1e35d7bfc/20250325_171412.jpg","gridUrl":"https://media.cgtrader.com/variants/mo1c9krqazid1y2wd3gwwtfhjoom/78add9c2f02fbd73a43ffb3970be38683c5f15eff6ca849dc78c644f4ff9ce1b/20250325_171412.webp","isAdultContent":false},"modelInfo":{"modelUrl":"https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-models/hobby-diy/robotics/hms-amethyst-black-swan-sloop-radio-controlled-working-model","isCgtVerified":true,"types":{"printReady":true,"animated":false,"pbr":false,"rigged":false,"lowPoly":false}},"metaverseFormatsList":[{"id":51,"name":".stl","is_native":false},{"id":100,"name":".pdf","is_native":false},{"id":222,"name":".mp4","is_native":false},{"id":null,"name":null,"is_native":false},{"id":129,"name":".3mf","is_native":false}],"categorySlug":"hobby-diy","subcategorySlug":"robotics","categoryTitle":"Hobby \u0026 DIY","subcategoryTitle":"RC \u0026 Robotics","schemaImageUrl":"https://img-new.cgtrader.com/items/5999782/c2ddf41e7f/hms-amethyst-black-swan-sloop-radio-controlled-working-model-3d-model-c2ddf41e7f.webp","saleOffDiscount":50,"eligibleForSubscription":false,"subscriptionSubscribed":false,"subscriptionPotential":false}},{"id":"4090627","type":"listingItem","attributes":{"id":4090627,"title":"MINIMALISTIC SLOOP","price":5.0,"description":"3d model for printing a sea boat.\nA beautiful, small sea vessel can be used as a toy, a trophy. (It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability.)[2] The term \"submarine\" is also sometimes used historically or informally to refer to remotely operated vehicles and robots, or to medium-sized or smaller vessels (such as the midget submarine and the wet sub). Submarines are referred to as boats rather than ships regardless of their size.[3]\n\nAlthough experimental submarines had been built earlier, submarine design took off during the 19th century, and submarines were adopted by several navies. They were first used widely during World War I (1914–1918), and are now used in many navies, large and small. Their military uses include: attacking enemy surface ships (merchant and military) or other submarines; aircraft carrier protection; blockade running; nuclear deterrence; stealth operations in denied areas when gathering intelligence and doing reconnaissance; denying or influencing enemy movements; conventional land attacks (for example, launching a cruise missile); and covert insertion of frogmen or special forces. Their civilian uses include: marine science; salvage; exploration; and facility inspection and maintenance. Submarines can be modified for specialized functions such as search-and-rescue missions and undersea cable repair. They are also used in the tourism industry and in undersea archaeology. Modern deep-diving submarines derive from the bathyscaphe, which evolved from the diving bell.\n\nMost large submarines consist of a cylindrical body with hemispherical (or conical) ends and a vertical structure, usually located amidships, which houses communications and sensing devices as well as periscopes. In modern submarines, this structure is called the \"sail\" in American usage and \"fin\" in European usage. A feature of earlier designs was the \"conning tower\": a separate pressure hull above the main body of the boat that enabled the use of shorter periscopes. There is a propeller (or pump jet) at the rear, and various hydrodynamic control fins. Smaller, deep-diving, and specialty submarines may deviate significantly from this traditional design. Submarines dive and resurface by using diving planes and by changing the amount of water and air in ballast tanks to affect their buoyancy.\n\nSubmarines encompass a wide range of types and capabilities. They range from small, autonomous examples, such as one- or two-person subs that operate for a few hours, to vessels that can remain submerged for six months, such as the Russian Typhoon class (the biggest submarines ever built). Submarines can work at depths that are greater than what is practicable (or even survivable) for human divers.[4]\n\nHistory\nMain article: History of submarines\nEtymology\nThe word submarine means 'underwater' or 'under-sea' (as in submarine canyon, submarine pipeline) though as a noun it generally refers to a vessel that can travel underwater.[5] The term is a contraction of submarine boat[6][7] and occurs as such in several languages, e.g. French (sous-marin), and Spanish (submarino), although others retain the original term, such as Dutch (Onderzeeboot), German (Unterseeboot), Swedish (Undervattensbåt), and Russian (подводная лодка: podvodnaya lodka), all of which mean 'submarine boat'. By naval tradition, submarines are usually referred to as boats rather than as ships, regardless of their size.[3] Although referred to informally as boats,[8][9] U.S. submarines employ the designation USS (United States Ship) at the beginning of their names, such as USS Alabama. In the Royal Navy, the designation HMS can refer to \"His Majesty's Ship\" or \"His Majesty's Submarine\", though the latter is sometimes rendered \"HMS/m\".[10][Note 1] Submarines are generally referred to as boats rather than ships.[Note 2]\n\nEarly human-powered submersibles\n\nAn early submersible craft, built by Cornelis Drebbel, propelled by oars\n16th and 17th centuries\nAccording to a report in Opusculum Taisnieri published in 1562:[11]\n\nTwo Greeks submerged and surfaced in the river Tagus near the City of Toledo several times in the presence of The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, without getting wet and with the flame they carried in their hands still alight.[12]\n\nIn 1578, the English mathematician William Bourne recorded in his book Inventions or Devises one of the first plans for an underwater navigation vehicle.[13] A few years later the Scottish mathematician and theologian John Napier wrote in his Secret Inventions (1596) that \"These inventions besides devises of sayling under water with divers other devises and strategems for harming of the enemyes by the Grace of God and worke of expert Craftsmen I hope to perform.\" It is unclear whether he carried out his idea.[14]\n\nJerónimo de Ayanz y Beaumont (1553–1613) created detailed designs for two types of air-renovated submersible vehicles. They were equipped with oars, autonomous floating snorkels worked by inner pumps, portholes and gloves used for the crew to manipulate underwater objects. Ayanaz planned to use them for warfare, using them to approach enemy ships undetected and set up timed gunpowder charges on their hulls.[15]\n\nThe first submersible of whose construction there exists reliable information was designed and built in 1620 by Cornelis Drebbel, a Dutchman in the service of James I of England. It was propelled by means of oars.[14]\n\n18th century\nCutaway replica of Bushnell's \"Turtle\" at the Submarine Force Library and Museum, Groton, Connecticut\nCutaway replica of Bushnell's \"Turtle\" at the Submarine Force Library and Museum, Groton, Connecticut\nBy the mid-18th century, over a dozen patents for submarines/submersible boats had been granted in England. In 1747, Nathaniel Symons patented and built the first known working example of the use of a ballast tank for submersion. His design used leather bags that could fill with water to submerge the craft. A mechanism was used to twist the water out of the bags and cause the boat to resurface. In 1749, the Gentlemen's Magazine reported that a similar design had initially been proposed by Giovanni Borelli in 1680. Further design improvement stagnated for over a century, until application of new technologies for propulsion and stability.[16]\n\nThe first military submersible was Turtle (1775), a hand-powered acorn-shaped device designed by the American David Bushnell to accommodate a single person.[17] It was the first verified submarine capable of independent underwater operation and movement, and the first to use screws for propulsion.[18]\n\n19th century\nIllustration by Robert Fulton showing a \"plunging boat\"\n1806 illustration by Robert Fulton showing a \"plunging boat\"\nIn 1800, France built Nautilus, a human-powered submarine designed by American Robert Fulton. They gave up on the experiment in 1804, as did the British, when they reconsidered Fulton's submarine design.\n\nIn 1850, Wilhelm Bauer's Brandtaucher was built in Germany. It remains the oldest known surviving submarine in the world.[19]\n\nIn 1864, late in the American Civil War, the Confederate navy's H. L. Hunley became the first military submarine to sink an enemy vessel, the Union sloop-of-war USS Housatonic, using a gun-powder-filled keg on a spar as a torpedo charge. The Hunley also sank. The explosion's shock waves may have killed its crew instantly, preventing them from pumping the bilge or propelling the submarine.[20]\n\nIn 1866, Sub Marine Explorer was the first submarine to successfully dive, cruise underwater, and resurface under the crew's control. The design by German American Julius H. Kroehl (in German, Kröhl) incorporated elements that are still used in modern submarines.[21]\n\nIn 1866, Flach was built at the Chilean government's request by Karl Flach, a German engineer and immigrant. It was the fifth submarine built in the world[22] and, along with a second submarine, was intended to defend the port of Valparaiso against attack by the Spanish Navy during the Chincha Islands War.\n\nMechanically powered submarines\nSubmarines could not be put into widespread or routine service use by navies until suitable engines were developed. The era from 1863 to 1904 marked a pivotal time in submarine development, and several important technologies appeared. A number of nations built and used submarines. Diesel electric propulsion became the dominant power system and equipment such as the periscope became standardized. Countries conducted many experiments on effective tactics and weapons for submarines, which led to their large impact in World War I.\n\n1863–1904\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeral at Cartagena, 1888\nA reliable means of propulsion for the submerged vessel was only made possible in the 1880s with the advent of the necessary electric battery technology. The first electrically powered boats were built by Isaac Peral y Caballero in Spain (who built Peral), Dupuy de Lôme (who built Gymnote) and Gustave Zédé (who built Sirène) in France, and James Franklin Waddington (who built Porpoise) in England.[25] Peral's design featured torpedoes and other systems that later became standard in submarines.[26][27]\n\n\nUSS Plunger, launched in 1902\n\n\n\n","imageAlt":"submarine 3D print model","url":"https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-models/hobby-diy/automotive/submarine-3d-print-model","isCLDApplicable":false,"isSaleOffApplicable":false,"gaAttributes":{},"primaryImage":{"gridFallbackUrl":"https://media.cgtrader.com/variants/rm3179ltv4mht669rlmon5wf127a/a26e47dab5f2d22c43d6c5ce4b4b46ecc30c70918878397cba1a10c1e35d7bfc/1.jpg","gridUrl":"https://media.cgtrader.com/variants/rm3179ltv4mht669rlmon5wf127a/78add9c2f02fbd73a43ffb3970be38683c5f15eff6ca849dc78c644f4ff9ce1b/1.webp","isAdultContent":false},"modelInfo":{"modelUrl":"https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-models/hobby-diy/automotive/submarine-3d-print-model","isCgtVerified":false,"types":{"printReady":true,"animated":false,"pbr":false,"rigged":false,"lowPoly":false}},"metaverseFormatsList":[{"id":2,"name":".3ds","is_native":false},{"id":6,"name":".c4d","is_native":false},{"id":51,"name":".stl","is_native":false},{"id":25,"name":".dae","is_native":false},{"id":5,"name":".fbx","is_native":false},{"id":216,"name":".jpg","is_native":false},{"id":215,"name":".png","is_native":false}],"categorySlug":"hobby-diy","subcategorySlug":"automotive","categoryTitle":"Hobby \u0026 DIY","subcategoryTitle":"Automotive \u0026 Car parts","schemaImageUrl":"https://img-new.cgtrader.com/items/7157869/a5fc89549a/submarine-3d-print-model-3d-model-a5fc89549a.webp","saleOffDiscount":0,"eligibleForSubscription":false,"subscriptionSubscribed":false,"subscriptionPotential":false}},{"id":"5619539","type":"listingItem","attributes":{"id":5619539,"title":"Japanese Ship Bases Victory at Sea","price":12.0,"description":"1:1800 scale bases to go along with Ghukek's Naval Miniatures. The following year, after acquiring a sloop-of-war, the Morrigan, Shay was tasked with recovering the ancient artifacts. As he and Liam hunted down the Templars in possession of the Pieces of Eden, Shay began to question the Assassins' methods.\n\nAfter recovering the Precursor box and Manuscript, Shay and his fellow Assassin, Hope Jensen, used them to discern the location of a First Civilization Temple in Lisbon. Achilles sent Shay to Lisbon in 1755, believing (incorrectly) that the Temple held an Apple of Eden.
