Print the head with a resin printer and the thread insert with an FDM printer, because from my experience resin printed threads wear of more easily.\nThere's some tolerance already between the head and the threaded insert but some sanding may be needed for it to fit.\n\nLastly, whichever version you decide to print I would advise to print just the thread insert first to make sure it fits, if not; scale it up or down a little just on the XY axis and make sure to apply that scale to the head aswell only on the XY axis. But, in order to get the most out of it, the model requires some glue (preferably a thick, gap filling kind, like epoxy or gorilla glue). It also requires some small magnets. I used 5x3mm magnets, but I have provided files for 3x2 and 6x3 sizes as well, and more can be easily added using the provided blend file. (also, feel free to let me know if you'd like me to add files for another size!).\n\nIt might be possible to make these parts work with a friction-fit, but it worries me to have two attracting magnets permanently suspended half a millimeter away from each other, without something holding them in place firmly, so I decided to just use glue in hopes the fidgets can last a long time.\n\nThe motion of the stick is very smooth, and it snaps quickly into each position in the gear shift. The ‘gyroscope’ mechanism lets the stick pivot really smoothly, without any lubrication, and prevents it from rotating in place. \n\nThe magnets make it so that the stick always wants to jump into whatever the nearest position is. You can kind of just flick it, and it will instantly pop over to the position you flicked it towards. \n\n**Parts Needed:**\n\n- 8 small magnets\n- Thick, strong glue\n- One base (with your magnet size) (your choice of keychain type)\n- One lid (your choice)\n- One gyro (with your magnet size)\n- One stick (your choice)\n\n\n**Printing Instructions:**\n\nI have successfully printed every part using my high-speed profile (0.4mm nozzle * 0.2mm height), on my rickety little bedslinger. However, for best results, I recommend these settings:\n\nfor the gyroscope, use a lower layer height in order to get better results on the hinges. A little sagging on the underside is no big deal.\n\nfor the stick, use a lower speed to ensure that it is smooth up and down. You may need to use a brim, but that is something that will depend on your printer. Supervise it if you do not use a brim. I recommend you use at least 3 perimeters.\n\nfor the lid, lower speed for dimensional accuracy along the guiding/slide holes, is ideal. A friction shifter is much more tolerant of minor problems like slightly bent derailers or worn cables / housings. \r\nHeavily tested with 7-speed setup - but should work with any number of speeds (front or rear derailer). \r\nI just biked from Seattle to Portland using this shifter (204 miles) without any problems. \r\nWith 300+ miles on same shifter - I'm reasonably confident it's pretty solid and should last a while.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eInstructions\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe shifter has three parts bottom_assembly, lever and washer. \r\nI've included Solidworks designs files and IGES format - if you're printing just get the 3 STL files. \r\nPrinted on Makerbot Replicator 2: \r\nBlack PLA \r\n2 Shells 100% Infill \r\nAbout 1.5 hour print time \r\nThe above settings are fairly conservative / fairly bomb-proof. You can probably get an adequately tough print using less infill (but you may want to add another shell or two). \r\nIf you want a fully solid print with Makerware 2.2 or later - create a custom profile and set the infill style as linear. I found this was creating some cosmetic print issues - so I've gone back to the default hexagonal fill (which seems strong enough). \r\nNon-printed parts: \r\n2x #10 Nylon Lock Nuts \r\n2x #10 x 1\" Machine Screws \r\n3x #8 Washers (yup - they fit) \r\nSplicing tape (or thin piece of rubber) for mounting (standard electrical tape does not work) \r\nAssembly / install should be pretty intuitive. \r\nThe three washers are all stacked on top of the lever - and primarily act as a spacer so the 1\" machine screws fit. \r\nThe screw works as a friction adjustment and allows for a large amount of wear before anything needs to be replaced. \r\nUse the splicing tape (decent hardware stores will have this) to assure a snug mount that doesn't shift around. You might be able to substitute rubber bands / something else for this. \r\n--Do not over-tighten the handlebar mounting bolt - that's one way to crack the base.-- \r\nMake sure the screw fits in the lever without binding (it's OK if it binds a bit in the base piece). If it binds - drill it out until it doesn't (otherwise the shifter may loosen/tighten itself). \r\nAdding a small amount of bike lube between the washers may also help prevent things from loosening (do not lube anyplace else). \r\nWant to adjust your shifter using your metric bike Allen wrenches? Just use a standard #10-32 cap screw. It uses a 5/32\" hex wrench to drive - which is virtually identical to a 4mm hex wrench (this is how I currently have things setup). \r\nYou can also use a #10-32 thumb screw for tool-free adjusting. \r\nExpect a few friction adjustments in the first mile or \r\ntwo - then again around mile 50 - and less frequently after that. I just biked from Seattle to Portland (204 miles) with no adjustments! Over 400+ miles on the same print so far! \r\nMinor 1.1 Update: \r\nThe screw holes are a bit wider and shouldn't need to be drilled out to avoid binding now.
