Building started in the early 40s and was completed around 1944. \nSix ships were planned, but the last two got cancelled. Even though they were built to fight battleships, not a single one ever faced a big opponent. All ships participated in WW2, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold war. They got decommissined and commissioned several times, undergoing serious refits to stay up to date with the modern weaponries like shown in this model. This refit included the removal of all old Anti Aircraft batteries and some secondary turrets, replacing them with CIWS and Launch systems for rockets. The unique design of the ship, distinguished by its revolving turret which was designed by American inventor Theodore Timby, was quickly duplicated and established the monitor type of warship.\n\nOn 24 December 1862, orders were issued directing Monitor to Beaufort, North Carolina to join USS Passaic and USS Montauk for a joint Army Navy expedition against Wilmington, North Carolina, where she would join the blockade off Charleston. \n\nWhile the design of Monitor was well-suited for river combat, her low freeboard and heavy turret made her highly unseaworthy in rough waters. Under the command of John P. Bankhead, Monitor put to sea on 31 December, under tow from USS Rhode Island, as a heavy storm developed off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.  Monitor sank approximately 16 miles (26 km) southeast off Cape Hatteras with the loss of sixteen men, including four officers, some of whom remained in the turret and went down with the ironclad. When I open it up in Cura it is tiny. It is exactly 2.08 inches or 52.862mm long.\n\nI got the best results printing the lure belly touching the raft.\n\nI use split shot (size/item# 735-7 qty:30 per bag WATER GREMLIN ROUND SPLIT SHOT bought at Walmart) to get the correct wobble and to hold the added small buck shot in the body. Certain elements not to scale.\n\nFour South Dakota Class battleships were commissioned by the US Navy in 1942. They sported nine 16 inch guns and an array of secondary armament. They were more space efficient than their predecessor class, the North Carolina class, which allowed them to be smaller while still having better armor. The battleships saw service throughout the war in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.\n\nThere are two surviving South Dakota Class ships; USS Massachusetts, and USS Alabama.\n\nThis is a free sample of my South Dakota-class model. It approximately represents the USS Indiana.\n\nThis model is designed and tested at 1/1800th scale, but up-scaling and down-scaling are possible. Since the model is optimized for 1/1800th scale, it is not ideal to print larger versions due to a lack of detail. The gun barrels and mast have been enlarged.\n\nThis is part of my collection of WWII warships, keep an eye out for more to come.
