DESCRIPTION

The USS New Jersey is an Iowa-class battleship built by the US Navy during WW2, continuing service up until the early 1990s. The Iowa class was the biggest and last class of battleships built by the US, since aircraft carriers proved to be more effective in naval combat during the second half of the war. Of the six planned units only four were finished: Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri and Wisconsin. The class featured a very high speed for their size, fairly heavy armament, decent armour and very good AA-weaponry. However, since most units were finished relatively late in the war none saw action against battleships, yet Missouri was hit by a Kamikaze in 1945.

USS New Jersey's biggest foe during WW2 would be Typhoon Cobra, a heavy storm which would cost three ships in total, leaving several more damaged. Once Japan had capitulated onboard her sistership Missouri and the war was over, she was used to ferry troops back to the US mainland and was then mothballed in 1948. As the Korean war broke out the ship was quickly reactivated and briefly modernized, serving in the war as heavy artillery support. In the Koran war she would be hit once, costing one crewman his life. Throughout the Korean War New Jersey would prove vital for the support of allied troops and the suppression of the enemy. One the Korean war was over she continued to cruise on several missions towards Europe, having spent a great amount of ammunition. The second mothballing followed not much later in 1957.

The third reactivation of New Jersey happened during the Vietnam war as the only ship of the class, since it was deemed that her condition was better than the one of the sisterships. Following a bigger refit she was put into service once more in 1968, making her the only active battleship in the world. Just as in Korea, her role was to bombard enemy positions and support allied ships and troops in their operation. Having spent a great amount of ammunition again she was deemed as counterproductive for eventual peace efforts and was recalled to the US where she was then deactivated and put into reserve in 1969. The future of the whole class was unknown, especially since the old machinery and complicated technology made the ships costly to operate.

When the plan of the Navy was realised to have a 600-ship strong navy during the 1980s, all four ships of the class were recalled into service yet again, recieving the biggest and most drastic refits yet. In 1982 most of the old weaponry was removed and replaced by modern missiles and radar systems, keeping the now 40 year old battleship up to date with the much newer Kirov-class battlecruiser of the Soviet Union. Being the first ship of the class to be ready once more, she was deployed at several missions, yet fired the first few shots in the mediteranean. After these deployments she continued on several exercises, reaching the Persian Gulf in 1989. After completing a last cruise she reached Puget Sound in 1991. A final deactivation in 1999 followed, the ship remained in mothballs up until the following year when the Navy decided to give the ship to a museum. The Battleship New Jersey Memorial and Museum opened its gates in 2001 and has been open ever since, recently uploading several in depth videos of the ship on their Youtube channel.
