Saab JAS 39 Gripen, also designated as F-39 Gripen, is a fourth and a half generation single-engine light multipurpose fighter manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab. It was designed to replace the Saab 35 Draken and 37 Viggen in the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet). The Gripen has a delta and canard wing configuration, as well as fly-by-wire flight controls. It is powered by a Volvo RM12 and has a top speed of Mach 2. Such aircraft were later modified for NATO interoperability standards and for aerial refueling. JAS is the abbreviation for Jakt, Attack, Spaning and Gripen (from the Greek: Γρύπας, Gryphus is the name of the mythological creature from antiquity, half lion, half eagle, whose image is also present in the logo of the Saab brand itself.
