Two units have been built in total: Maya and Haguro. Noteworthy is that Japan reused names from ships having served in world war two, having been cruisers of different classes.\n\nAfter the preceeding Atago-class had been built and tested, Japan came to the conclusion that the new class of warships should use the AEGIS-System for the third time. The outdated Hatakaze class was planned to be decommissioned and thus a gap in the fleet opened. Once more, Japan decided to use the already well proven basis of the Kongo-class and more recent Atago-class though several changes were made in terms of stealth. The hull was retained from the Atago class, though some minor changes were done on the main mast and stack assembly . Additionally, stealth capabilities were added through the addition of sheeting and angled walls as well as removal of unneeded clutter on the deck . The AEGIS-suite was modernized to the current version, allowing the class to intercept ballistic missiles right from launch unlike the previous Atago-class . Like the US-counterpart and the Atago-clas, both ships recieved a hangar on the aft deck to shelter a helicopter in bad weather. The new design also included several locally built systems, alike of the previous class. The large anti ship missiles were the Type 90 anti-ship missiles, the main gun a Mk45 5\"/62 built under license.\n\nIn total the Atago class has access to 96 VLS-cells in two seperate batteries, two triple torpedo launchers as well as several systems which stay similar to the Kongo-class. Due to the lenghtening of the hull the displacement increased slightly, now slightly surpassing 10.000 tons under full load. Overall the design is a more updated version of the Kongo-class, setting a clear trend in japanese warship design featuring the AEGIS-system. This trend would be continued with the currently last iteration of the design, being the Maya class.\n\nThe Haguro, named after the mountain Haguro, was laid down as the second ship of the class in January of 2018 and was launched over a year later. Her commissioning happened in 2021 after the Covid Pandemic had slowed down the building and commissioning of the class. As the ship is a modern one, she has not taken part in any active combat activities yet. In November of 2022 the ship conducted exercises in defending against ballistic missiles together with her sistership Maya in cooperation with the US Navy near Hawaii. \n\nThis model includes a statsheet which displays some data of the ship as well as two renderings of the model. The models itself isnt scaled, the scale table is down below.\n\n1/4000: 4,25cm or 1.67in\n\n1/3000: 5,66cm or 2.22in\n\n1/2000: 8,5cm or 3.34in\n\n1/1000: 17,0cm or 6.69in\n\nFor self calculation: The JS Haguro is roughly 170m or 557ft 5in long.\n\nThe model is intended to be used with little supports as possible, yet some are recommended below the barrel of the main gun, fire control radars and the main mast. Be carefull when removing the support structures, as the mast is quite fragile and high in mass especially the braces are fragile. I recommend using a resin printer for this. In December 2025, following the cancellation of the troubled Constellation-class frigate program due to cost overruns and schedule failures, the US Navy announced that it would base its next generation of warships — designated FF(X) — directly on the Legend-class hull design. Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan confirmed the decision, stating: \"I've directed the acquisition of a new frigate class based on HII's Legend-Class National Security Cutter design — a proven, American-built ship that has been protecting U.S. interests at home and abroad.\" The program, announced on December 19, 2025, plans to build 50 to 65 ships across multiple production flights, with the first hull targeted to be in the water by 2028. The initial FF(X) flight will be armed with a 57mm gun, two 30mm cannons, and a Mk 49 Rolling Airframe Missile launcher, with the stern deck configured to accept containerized modular weapons and sensor packages that can be swapped depending on the mission. In short, the ship that inspired our 1:96 scale model is no longer just a Coast Guard cutter — it is now the foundation of the United States Navy's future surface fleet, making this one of the most historically significant vessel designs in American naval history today.\n\n3D printing settings\nDesigned with the home builder in mind, the hull assembles from approximately 20 core pieces sliced to fit comfortably on print beds as small as 22×22 cm, making this accessible on most standard FDM printers. Every hull section features integrated alignment and mounting details, and two dedicated clip types are included to hold pieces securely while adhesive sets — keeping the build process clean and accurate. Underwater and superstructure sections are separated into distinct parts, allowing builders to swap filament colors and skip an entire painting step. For those with color-capable printers, a 3MF file with embedded colors and textures is included for a vivid, ready-to-display result straight off the bed. I only combined them for the thumbnail shot, the models themselves are seperate, yet scaled the same. The WW2 Version is called Gearing, the refitted version is called FRAM.\n\nThe Gearing-class was a class of destroyers built for the US Navy during the last years of the second world war. Being the successor of the highly effective Fletcher-class and a lenghtened version of the Allen M Sumner class, they saw service in the Pacific threatre. 98 units were built in total, with most units not seeing any active duty in the war. However, since their weaponry and radar systems were quite advanced, they stayed in service during the Korean and Vietnam war. Most of the time the ships were used to escort bigger task forces, using the lenghtened hull for greater endurance. Due to insights gained during the war, several units had their aft torpedo launcher removed and additional AA-guns installed to handle the arial threat. The main armament was the Dual Purpose 5\" gun which saw great service in the US Navy during the time and was used extensively during Vietnam. \n\nSince the technology improved radically during the years following WW2 and Korea, the FRAM (Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization) conversions were started. This replaced the aging WW2-era equipment to more modern weaponry, changing the ships drastically. In the FRAM I conversion, the B-Turret was removed and replaced by two triple MK32 Torpedoe tubes. An ASROC-launcher was installed where the forward torpedo launcher had sat, giving the ships great ASW-capabilities. A hangar with helo-deck was mounted on the aft of the ship, giving the ships further ASW capabilities. The so called DASH-drone was withdrawn from use during the 70s after half of the total units in Navy service had been lost.  The FRAM II conversion was mainly designed for the shorter Allen M Sumner class, yet several Gearings were refitted as well. The main difference was the lack of an ASROC-launcher and the second turret which was kept. \n\nDue to the modernization and great capabilities, the Gearings with the FRAM I conversion continued to serve in the US Navy up until the 1970s, with the last one being decommissioned in 1983. Several units were sold to foreign contries like Turkiye, Taiwan, Pakistan, Mexico and South Korea. In these navies they continued to serve up until the early 2000s were they were either scrapped or sunk as targets. The last ship was scrapped in December 2021 in South Korea, leaving 5 museum ships of the nearly 100 built ships.\n\nThe models do not represent any specific ship, since most differed greatly. Two units have been built in total: Atago and Ashigara. Noteworthy is that Japan reused names from ships having served in world war two, having been heavy cruisers of different classes.\n\nAfter the preceeding Kongo-class had been built and tested, Japan came to the conclusion that the new class of warships should use the AEGIS-System once more. As the now outdated Tachikaze-class was planned for retirement, concrete plans to build a new class were made shortly after the century turned. As the basis the Kongo-class was taken, though several changes were made. The hull was lenghtened and the VLS moved. Additionally, stealth capabilities were added through the addition of sheeting and angled walls. Since helicopters proved to be important onboard the new classes of ships built, especially taking the planned Hyuuga-class into account, preparations for servicing helicopters onboard were taken. Like the US-counterpart the Atago-class recieved a hangar on the aft deck to shelter a helicopter in bad weather. The new design also included a switch to several locally built systems. The Harpoon missiles were exchanged for the Type 90 anti-ship missiles, the OTO Melara main gun was traded for a Mk45 5\"/62 built under license. \n\nIn total the Atago class has access to 96 VLS-cells in two seperate batteries, two triple torpedo launchers as well as several systems which stay similar to the Kongo-class. Due to the lenghtening of the hull the displacement increased slightly, now slightly surpassing 10.000 tons under full load. Overall the design is a more updated version of the Kongo-class, setting a clear trend in japanese warship design featuring the AEGIS-system. This trend would be continued with the currently last iteration of the design, being the Maya class.\n\nThe Ashigara was laid down as the second ship of the class in April of 2005 and was launched over a year later. Her commissioning happened in 2008, after which her assigned homeport was Sasebo. As the ship is a modern one, she has not taken part in any active combat activities yet. Her first real emergency situation was the earthquake and tsunami of 2011, in which she took part in disaster relief. Due to the rising tensions between Japan and North Korea, Ashigara took part in several exercises with the US Navy which went close to the Korean peninsula. Additionally the destroyer was sent to several exercises near Hawaii, for example RIMPAC 2020 where she screened JS Ise. \n\nThis model includes a Statsheet which displays some data of the ship as well as two renderings of the model. The models itself isnt scaled, the scale table is down below.\n\n1/4000: 4,13cm or 1.62in\n\n1/3000: 5,5cm or 2.16in\n\n1/2000: 8,25cm or 3.24in\n\n1/1000: 16,5cm or 6.49in\n\nFor self calculation: The JS Ashigara is roughly 165m or 541ft 4in long.\n\nThe model is intended to be used with little supports as possible, yet some are recommended below the barrel of the main gun, fire control radars and the main mast. Be carefull when removing the support structures, as the mast is quite fragile and high in mass especially the braces are fragile. I recommend using a resin printer for this. The delivery of all units was delayed greatly since all ships faced several flaws out of the dockyard. A permanent list to starboard, problems with the main gearbox, lacking fire protection of cables and a too small helicopter hangar led the Navy to the decision not to accept the units right away and return them to the dockyard again- for the first time in German history so far.\n\nOverall the class is designed for survelliance of mission areas, the deployment for special forces and shelling of land based targets. The main feature of other frigates is lacking here, all ships dont feature a VLS. Overall this class relies heavily on other frigates in fleet to carry out offensive strikes, since they only feature defensive weaponry. The lack of offensive armament was heavily discussed, especially since the ships have been the biggest frigates ever entering German service. Clocking in at 7.200 tons of displacement, these ships are the biggest frigates in the world, as of February 2023. The standard Harpoon and RAM launchers as well as a 127mm cannon are the biggest systems which are common among most frigates. \n\nSo far no unit has seen a big mission, since most were put into service during the pandemic.\n\nNote: This model is recommended to be used in the 1/2000 scale. The models itself isnt scaled, the scale table is down below.\n\n1/4000: 3,75cm or 1.47in\n\n1/3000: 5cm or 1.96in\n\n1/2000: 7,5cm or 2.95in\n\n1/1000: 15cm or 5.9in\n\nFor self calculation: The Baden-Württemberg is roughly 150m or 490ft long.\n\nThe model is intended to be used with little supports as possible, yet some are recommended below the barrel of the main and secondary guns.
