Triggered by the increasing shortage of material and fuel at the end of World War II, some of the German vehicles have been modified by the addition of a wood gas or compressed Stadtgas burner. This concept existing in different technical layouts can be called as one of the first hybrids. It has been used also for the German halftrack Sd.Kfz. 251 starting with driving school vehicles.
