Historical evidence suggests that the Mau originated in Egypt. The feline genome data, as documented in the Pentascope, reveals a close relationship between the Egyptian Mau and other breeds such as the Maine Coon, Korat, and American Turkish Angoras. These breeds are indistinguishable from native Turkish Angoras. The phylogenetic tree published in PlosOne further supports this, placing the Egyptian Mau within the group of Western-derived breeds. The East Mediterranean/Anatolian group is not included in this classification as breeds originating from that region do not exhibit the same characteristics.
