According to Christian teaching, all angels are service spirits. They were created by God before the creation of the material world[8], over which they have considerable power. There are far more of them than there are of all people. The purpose of the angels is to glorify God, to embody his glory, to direct and embody grace for the glory of God[8] (because they are a great help to those who are saved), and their destiny is to glorify God and fulfill His orders and will. Angels, as well as men, have a mind, and their mind is much more perfect than the human mind. Angels are eternal[8]. Most often, angels are depicted as beardless youths, in light diaconal (symbol of service) vestments (surplice, ORAR, charge), with wings behind their backs (symbol of speed) and with a halo over their heads. However, in visions, angels appeared to people as six-winged (when Angels are not similar to man in appearance, then their wings are like flowing streams of grace), and in the form of wheels, dotted with eyes, and in the form of creatures with four faces on their heads, and as swords of fire rotating, and even in the form of bizarre animals (sphinxes, chimeras, centaurs, pegasuses, griffins, unicorns, etc.).

In the angelic world, God established a strict hierarchy of 9 angelic ranks: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Powers, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels[8]. Lucifer, who led the entire angelic host — the most powerful, talented, beautiful and close to God - was so proud of his highest position among other angels that he wanted to become higher than God, and because of this he was overthrown. Moreover, he was able to seduce the multitude of angels of different ranks. And at this moment, the Archangel Michael called on those who hesitated to remain faithful to God, led an army of light angels and struck Lucifer[9] (who became known as the devil, Satan, the evil one, etc., and other fallen angels — demons, demons, devils, etc.). Fallen spirits are not completely deprived of their former power and, by the permission of God, can inspire people with sinful thoughts and desires, guide them and cause them pain. But people are also helped by good angels, who are more numerous than demons (in the Apocalypse (Rev. 12:4) it is said that the serpent (Lucifer) carried away a third of the stars (angels)).

White angel (fresco of the XII century, mileshev monastery) However, the name of a spirit is not the same as the name of a person. God is a Spirit, and as a Spirit, he calls a being not by the transitory, but by the Glory. The name of the angel is the name of his glory. The names of some (in the Orthodox tradition — seven[10]) Angels (Archangels) are revealed to people: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Yehudiel, Selafiel, Barachiel. In this case, the first four angels are considered biblical, that is, their names are directly named in Scripture, and the last three are known from Tradition[11].

In Orthodoxy, there is an idea of guardian angels sent by God to every person immediately after his baptism: see That you do not despise any of these little ones; for I tell you that their Angels in heaven always see the face of My father in Heaven (Matt.18.10). Every person is also hunted by demons who want to destroy his soul with the help of inspired fears, temptations and temptations. In the heart of every human being, there is an invisible battlebetween God and the devil. But almost always, God does not personally appear to people, but trusts his angels (or Holy people) to convey his will. This order is established by God, so that a greater number of individuals will be involved (and thus sanctified) in the Providence of God, and so as not to violate the freedom of people who are not able to withstand the personal appearance of God in all his glory. Therefore, the old Testament prophets, John the Baptist, and many saints and Reverends in the Church are called angels.

In addition, for every Christian, the earthly Church with heavenly patrons offers special prayers, and God has special care for him.

Each angel (and the devil) has different abilities: some specialize in the virtue of non-possessiveness, others strengthen people's faith, and others help in something else. In the same way, demons — some catch up with prodigal passions, others — anger, others — vanity, and so Addition to personal guardian Angels (assigned to each person), There are angels — patrons of cities and entire States. But they never quarrel, even if these States are at war with each other, but pray to God for the understanding of people and the gift of peace on earth.

Angelic hierarchy in the Christian faith

Cathedral of Archangel Michael and other celestial forces disembodied (Novgorod icon, end of the XV century) Main article: the Angelic hierarchy Cherubim are mentioned many times in the old Testament. In The Book Of Genesis (3:24), (PS.17: 11), (1 Sam.4:4, 2 Sam.6:2, Is.37: 16, etc.).The Seraphim are described in the book of Isaiah (Is 6: 1-7). In three Epistles of the AP. Paul (between 48 and 58) are named in addition to the Angels: Archangels, Thrones, Dominions, Beginnings, Powers, and Powers.(Ephesus 1: 21), (Ephesus 6: 12), (Col. 1: 16), (1 Sol 4: 16).

In his creation, St. Gregory the Theologian writes that there are nine angelic ranks: Unless postrema to the extent in which know that there are some Angels (ἀγγέλους), Archangels (ἀρχαγγέλους), Thrones (θρόνους), Domination (κυριότητας), Start (ἀρχάς), Power (ἐξουσίας), Lordship (λαμπρότητας), Climbing (ἀναβάσεις), smart Power or Minds (νοερὰς δυνάμεις, ἢ νόας), nature pure, unalloyed, unbending or neudobopriemlemyh to evil, continually locostusa the neighborhood of the first Cause[12][13].

St. Cyril of Jerusalem also allocates nine ranks, although in this order: ... Therefore we remember...all creation ... invisible, Angels, Archangels, Forces, Dominions, Beginnings, Powers, Thrones, cherubim of many eyes (Ezek. 10: 21 and 1,6), as if to say to David: magnify the Lord with me (PS. 33,4). We also remember the Seraphim, whom Isaiah saw in the Holy Spirit, standing around the Throne of God, and covering their faces with two wings, their feet with two, and flying with two, and exclaiming: Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts (ISA. 6.2-3). And for this purpose, we repeat this Theology, which was given to us from the Seraphim, so that we may become partakers of the song of kupno with the first-rate armies[14] [15].

St. Athanasius the Great (d. 373) mentions in his Epistle to Serapion: 13) ... Angels ...Seraphim... Cherubim... Archangels ...Lords... Thrones ... Beginnings... other things[16].

In the Word for the Nativity of our Great God and Savior Jesus Christ, St. Amphilochius of Iconium (d. 394) lists: Cherubim, Seraphim, Archangels, Dominions, Powers and Authorities[17].

In one of the sermons attributed to John Chrysostom, 9 angelic ranks are listed, in the same order as that of Cyril of Jerusalem: divine wisdom, using this lamp, found one lost drachma and added it to the nine angelic drachmas. It is necessary, beloved, to say who is the wife who has ten drachmas. This is the wisdom of God, which has ten drachmas. Which ones? Count: angels, archangels, beginnings, powers, powers, thrones, dominions, cherubim, Seraphim, and primordial Adam[18][19].

The basis for the creation of the Church's teaching about angels is an apocryphal book written at the end of the fifth century, attributed to Dionysius the Areopagite, On the heavenly hierarchy [20] (Greek. Περί της ουρανίας, lat. De caelesti hierarchia), better known in the sixth-century edition. According to this book, the angels are arranged in the following order:

The first face

Seraphim (Hebrew. שׂרפים — burning, flaming, fiery; others-Greek. σεραφίμ; Is. 6:2, 3) — the six-winged angels. Flaming, Fiery. They are flaming with love for God and encourage many to it. The cherubim (al-Greek. χερουβίμ from Hebrew. ררובים, kerubim; intercessors, minds, distributors of knowledge, outpouring of wisdom; Gen. 3:24; Ezek. 10; PS. 17: 11) - four-winged and four-faced angels. Their name means: outpouring of wisdom, enlightenment. The Liturgy of the Byzantine rite includes a chant called the cherubic song: Those Cherubim secretly form and give Life to the Trinity the Trisagion song.... It consists of two parts, separated by a great entrance, and the Royal gate of the altar opens in front of it. Thrones (other-Greek. θρννοι), according to Dionysius: God-bearing (Ezek. 1:15-21; 10: 1-17) — on them the Lord sits as on a throne and pronounces his Judgment. Second face

Domination (other-Greek. κυριττητες; lat. dominationes; Col. 1: 16) - instruct the earthly rulers appointed by God in wise management, teach them to control the senses, and tame sinful desires. Forces (other-Greek. δυνάμεις; lat. potestates; Rome. 8: 38; Eph. 1: 21) - they perform miracles and send down the grace of miracle-working and perspicacity to the saints of God. Authorities (other-Greek. ἐξουσίες; lat. virtutes; Col 1: 16) - have the power to tame the power of the devil. The third face

Superiors (the Beginning; the archons; al-Greek. ἀρχαί; lat. principates; ROM 8: 38; Eph 1: 21; Col. 1: 16) — they are charged with managing the Universe and the elements of nature. Archangels (chief angels; and the ancient Greek. михаилρχάγγελοι-Michael; (Rev. 12:7) - heavenly teachers teach people how to act in life. The angels (al-Greek. ἀγγελοι) is the most close to the people. They proclaim the intentions of God, instruct people to a virtuous and Holy life. Gabriel (Luke. 1:26); Raphael (Tov 5: 4); (for Pseudo-Dionysius, the Archangel Michael is an angel); Seven Angels with Golden bowls filled with the wrath of God (Rev. 15:1); the angel of the Abyss, Abaddon, with the chain and key of the abyss (Rev. 9:1, 11; 20:1); Seven Angels with trumpets (Rev. 8:6).
