model. A **Low Poly** version is also available._\n\n**Notes:** An extinct, tree-sized plants that lived during the Carboniferous and early Permian periods to which the modern horsetails (genus Equisetum) are closely related. Unlike their herbaceous modern counterparts, these plants were medium-sized trees which grew to heights of more than 10 meters. Although its stem was woody, it was nonetheless a delicate plant that grew in the sub-story of prehistoric forests. Several sub-genera of Calamites existed, this species fell into the category Stylocalamites and were distinct from other Calamites in that they had only limited foliage and featured a prominent strobilus missing in other sub-genera of Calamites, but is a feature found in modern horsetails. These plants grew from an underground connected network of rhizomes as well as from seeds. Fossils have been found virtually the world over suggesting the plant had a global range.\n\n**Included in this Package:** 18 models in total\n1. **Standard 1** -- 95,962 polygons, 136,243 vertices, 13.91m tall. There are no direct modern day relatives, but the plant is closely related to quillworts. It grew to around 2 metres tall and had a straight, non-branching stem and a thickened, tuberous base. It is believed to have been mostly semi-aquatic, and found in ponds and slowly moving streams where it grew in dense thickets under larger plants. Very old plants may further branch. The trunk lacked wood, or had a very slender layer only, with support coming from a layer of closely packed leaf bases just below the surface of the trunk. The centre of the trunk was filled with pith and it had photosynthetic tissue on the surface, meaning that it was probably green. Long, thin leaves grew in a spiral along the trunk but persisted only near its growing tip; on lower portions of the plant, where the leaves had fallen off, characteristic polygonal leaf scars remained. It appears to have preferred the mineral soils of river floodplains and higher ground. This preference for better-drained soils may have allowed it to survive the drying of the great coal swamps that led to the extinction of many tree-sized lycopsids during the middle of the Pennsylvanian Epoch (318 to 299 million years ago).
