The Evarts class of Destroyer escorts were built for anti submarine warfare against the U-boats Germany was using to destroy the convoy traffic coming from western nations to England to keep her supplied with food, weapons and ammunition. The Evarts class included 105 ships, 8 were cancelled and of the remainder 32 were delivered to the British Royal Navy as part of lend lease. They were reclassified by the British as Frigates and renamed the Captain’s Class. All the ships names were commissioned using names of captains of warships famous during the Napoleonic Wars.
