he sinking of the RMS Titanic occurred on the night of 14 April to the morning of 15 April 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean, four days after departing Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York City. The largest super ship operating at the time, Titanic, was carrying about 2,224 people when it hit an iceberg at 23:40 (ship's time [a]) on Sunday, April 14, 1912. It sank two hours and forty minutes later at 2:20 am Sunday, April 15th (05:18 GMT) and resulted in the death of more than 1,500 passengers. The sinking of the RMS Titanic is one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

Titanic had received several sea ice warnings on April 14, but the ship was sailing at nearly full speed when it collided with an iceberg. The ship suffered such a shock that it arched its starboard side and perforated five of its sixteen compartments. Titanic was designed to stay afloat if four of its compartments leaked instead of five, and the crew soon realized that the ship was going to sink. They used rocket beacons and wireless radio messages to seek assistance, while passengers were evacuated to lifeboats. Unfortunately, very few lifeboats were available and many were not fully stocked due to poor evacuation operations.

The ship was split when it sank with a thousand passengers and crew on board. Nearly everyone who jumps or falls into the water dies of hypothermia within minutes. RMS Carpathia arrived at the scene about an hour and a half after the disaster and rescued the last survivors at 9:15 am on April 15, more than 24 hours after Titanic's crew received its first drift ice warning. The disaster generated widespread public outrage over the low number of lifeboats, expired shipping regulations and the unequal treatment of different classes of passengers on the ship. Investigations were carried out after a disaster that resulted in changes to maritime regulations. This led to the creation of the International Convention for the Safety of Passengers at Sea (SOLAS) in 1914 which still governs maritime safety today.
