Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India's independence movement and a global symbol of nonviolent resistance, was born in 1869 in Porbandar, India. He studied law in England and initially practiced in South Africa, where he first encountered racism and injustice. This experience transformed him into a leader advocating for the rights of Indians in South Africa.
Inspired by principles of peace, justice, and nonviolence, Gandhi led India’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule. Through movements like the Salt March and campaigns of non-cooperation , he united millions of Indians in their fight for freedom. His efforts culminated in India gaining independence in 1947.
Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by a fanatic, but his ideals and philosophy continue to inspire freedom movements and human rights advocates worldwide.
