They are used to quickly add detail to an asset with otherwise simple geometry as they generally consist of multiple trim elements which can be UV mapped onto an asset to add the illusion of a higher level of detail which is not present on the model.Although terminology can become quite vague when you have trim sheets with elements which aren't meant tile such as panelling.
