Osirus Rex - Bennu

Osirus Rex - Bennu 3D model

Description

Detailed high resolution, dimensionally accurate model of the asteroid exploration satellite, Osirus Rex. (Plus a large section of an asteroid terrain and a small model of the Bennu asteroid are included.)

This satellite's missions are to take extensive images of and a sample of the Bennu surface material, and to hunt for trojan asteroids. To take a sample of Bennu's regolith, the Osirus Rex inverted itself over the surface of the Bennu asteroid, and extended an arm with a sampling head on it. It blew a jet of nitrogen gas through the head, and then sucked in the rocky material disturbed by the gas jet. The sample was deposited in a Sampler Unit that is the large white and bronze dish on the top instrument deck of the satellite. This sample unit is cast off from the main body and will return to Earth with its captured material.

The Osirus Rex satellite has solar panel wings that can be repositioned so that solar light constantly powers the satellite. It also has a special arm that can extend to the surface of an asteroid to take a sample of the asteroid's regolith (rocky surface material). Both features are present in this model. That is, you can re-position the solar panels as you wish, and unfold and extend the TAGSAM arm to create a render of the satellite taking a soil sample from the asteroid Bennu. (Appropriate pivot points are provided for these sub-components of the model.)

All parts of the models are UV mapped. All cameras, scientific instruments and atittude jets are accurately labeled, and sub-organized by material type.

There are two versions of the model in the *.obj and in the Maya file formatted versions. One is with the plain steel body that shows all the instruments to best effect. The other version has the body wrapped in gold foil. It is a little bit more difficult to see the individual instruments in this version.

The FBX version and the Maya versions have an extensive collection of alternative PBR texture sets for the satellite model. Each texture set has the full selection of base color, diffuse, normal, height, glossiness, AO, roughness, opacity and specular mats. The OBJ version has base color, normal or height and specular mats. A MAX version is available - just send me a note if you need one of these.

The shape of the Bennu asteroid model is taken directly from the JPL radar data.
