Pantsir-S1 (Russian: Панцирь-С1, NATO reporting name SA-22 Greyhound) is a combined short to medium range surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery weapon system produced by KBP of Tula, Russia. The system is a further development of SA-19/SA-N-11 and represents the latest air defence technology by using phased-array radars for both target acquisition and tracking.
The Pantsir missile system was designed to target and destroy a variety of incoming threats, including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. It operates in both a defensive and offensive capacity, offering protection for military and civilian infrastructure alike.
Initially designed as a short-range, mobile air defense system to complement Russia’s longer-range systems like the S-300 and S-400, the Pantsir system has evolved over time to become one of the most effective air defense systems in the world. With multiple variants and continuous upgrades, it remains a core component of the Russian military’s air defense strategy.
