The Berthier Model 1892 carbine was a compact bolt-action cavalry carbine adopted by the France in the late 19th century. Designed by French engineer Émile Berthier, it was developed to provide mounted troops with a lighter and shorter firearm than the standard infantry rifle. The weapon used the 8×50mmR Lebel cartridge and fed from a Mannlicher-style en-bloc clip inserted into an internal magazine, originally holding three rounds. Its simple, robust action and compact length made it well suited for cavalry, artillery crews, and other support troops. Variants of the carbine and its later modifications continued in service with French forces through World War I and beyond, with later updates increasing the magazine capacity to five rounds.
