DESCRIPTION

A model of an access panel or loft hatch. Access panels are doors or panels that can be easily opened or removed to provide access to a part to which you need occasional access in order to make a repair. An access panel can be either plastic, metal or plasterboard. They are most often used to give access to water, electricity, gas, telecommunication compartments, amongst others. These are referred to as mechanical and electrical (M and E / M&E) servicies. If they are fire-rated, access panels also offer protection and isolate the compartment to help slow the spread of fire .

Access panels are very versatile. They can be used in rooms such as bathrooms (back of faucets, under bath plumbing and shower mixing valves), kitchens (under sink plumbing, shut off valves, cooker hood ducting) and living rooms / areas (concealed TV, network and telephone cables). They can also be used for gas & electric services (meters, security systems and junction boxes).

If used as a loft hatch, to close off a loft or ceiling space, this is a model of drop-down design, which means the hatch, or loft door, drops down, allowing access to the loft or ceiling space using a ladder. The loft door is hindged, fixed to the frame along the shortest side.

As is detailed in this model, access panels or loft hatches are commonly manufactured with an all-around frame, as opposed to the usual one that does not frame the bottom of the door. They usually come with lock and cylinder that allow to lock the door properly with a key, like this model, but they can also be manufactured with a triangle locking system to make the access easier; a pole with a triangluar head could then be used to to open the hatch latch from ground level, without the need to stand on steps to reach the loft hatch door. The latch and the latch bore or mortise (hole recess) into the frame are all featured on this model.
