Description

Coin-in-slot 'Smith' gas meter, metal / glass / paint, assembled by Gas Meters Pty Ltd, Sydney / Melbourne, Australia, 1961, used at 9 Theodore St, Balmain, New South Wales, Australia, until 1992

Metal rectangular casing, painted green, with vertical gas inlet pipe on left hand side and outlet pipe on right hand side. Pipes are of 1 inch (25 mm) diameter and have external brass threads. Includes a linear glass-fronted dial showing amount of gas paid for, two slots (for sixpences and shillings) set into a dial in the centre of which is a large wing nut. Below this is a drawer to hold coins, with a handle, lock, provision for a padlock and a list of instructions. At the front right top is a glass-fronted 6-clock meter for accumulated gas usage, now reading 17,369 cubic feet.
