The Jahrhunderthalle (Century Hall) was constructed in 1902 for the Düsseldorf Trade Exhibition where it served as an exhibition hall for the Bochum Union industrial group. After the exhibition had ended, the hall was used as a blast engine machine hall for the blast furnaces of the Bochum Union. The hall was extended many times. Today its name is used to refer to the entire site, which has a total surface area of 8,900 square meters.

Explanatory panel for the complex of buildings in the Jahrhunderthalle The Jahrhunderthalle is an event hall in the Stahlhausen district of Bochum. The hall was built in 1902 by the Bochumer Verein for the Düsseldorf industrial and trade exhibition and subsequently reused as a blower machine hall for the blast furnaces of the Bochumer Verein. It was extended several times, the name Jahrhunderthalle is used today for the entire building, which covers an area of 8,900 m².

The steel construction of the 1902 part of the building is particularly remarkable because it was not primarily designed from an aesthetic point of view, but rather according to engineering considerations and is thus one of the first examples of a purely functional architecture: As it was already certain during the construction that the hall would not remain in Düsseldorf, it was built in such a way that it could be completely dismantled again. On some of the steel girders in the hall you can even read the inscription that was affixed there for the Düsseldorf exhibition. The main nave of the original hall is 66 metres long, 20 metres wide and 21 metres high, the aisles are 6.5 metres wide and 6 metres high. The façade was designed in the form of a Gothic church to commemorate Jacob Mayer's first successful steel casting attempts in 1851, as the first successfully cast products were bells. However, the 70-metre-high bell tower with a ringing of three bells was later not rebuilt in Bochum. The façade in Bochum has also not been restored in this form.

It is also remarkable how the hall was founded. Since the area of the Bochumer Verein was already completely built on in 1903 and therefore no coherent area was available, the hall was built over the existing buildings necessary for the production operation and the area level was raised. In the accessible basement, the foundations of the hall girders are still visible today, namely brick pyramids rising up from the basement floor (the former terrain level). On the floor below the hall there is even one of the buildings of that time; the window openings with parapet, facade etc. are still visible, although the house was later completely bricked in with fireclay and served as an oven.
