if you export from Maya it as an Alembic file yes it does work

I'm currently spending days reworking this mesh. UVs of solid parts aren't unfolded, skin is poor quality (see knees, elbows and shoulders), Topology doesn't allow correct mesh deformation, Mesh is full of nGons and t-shapes, proportions are off (head too big) and to add to that the mesh isn't even symmetrical when in T-Pose so good luck if you want to redo a skin / a set of animations. The rig is the only functional part so I would advise to delete all geometry and redo a complete character on top of it (+ UVs and skinning). Animations would be ok on a decent mesh.
