What is a Yeti and where does the word come from?
The Yeti, also known as the Abominable Snowman, is a mythical creature said to live in the snowy mountains of the Himalayas, especially in Nepal and Tibet. It's often described as a large, ape-like being covered in white or gray fur, walking upright like a human.
The word Yeti comes from the Tibetan language. It is believed to come from the words yeh-teh, which means something like rock bear or animal of rocky places. Local legends and stories about this mysterious creature have been told for centuries.
Western explorers and mountaineers popularized the idea of the Yeti in the 20th century, often reporting strange tracks in the snow. However, there is no scientific proof that the Yeti really exists—it remains a fascinating legend and part of Himalayan folklore.
