A 12×12 parallel milking parlour is a high-capacity dairy setup designed to milk twenty-four cows at once, twelve on each side of a central operator pit. The cows stand parallel to one another and at a right angle to the pit, facing away from the milkers, which allows easy access to the udders from the rear. The operator pit runs down the middle of the parlour, typically about three to four feet lower than the cow platform, enabling milkers to work at a comfortable height. Each cow stands in an individual stall equipped with shoulder or brisket rails to maintain proper positioning and a non-slip surface for safety. After milking, a rapid-exit front gate system lifts or swings open, letting all cows leave the parlour simultaneously while the next group enters from the holding area behind. The milking system includes twelve milking units per side—either individual or swing-over setups—connected to stainless steel pipelines that carry milk to the receiver jar and on to the bulk tank in the milk house. Automated take-offs, milk meters, and pulsation controls improve efficiency and consistency. The parlour is typically well-lit with LED fixtures, ventilated with fans or ridge vents, and designed for smooth cow flow to minimize stress and maximize throughput. A 12×12 parallel parlour of this scale offers an efficient balance between labor and productivity, making it well-suited for medium to large dairy operations focused on both comfort and performance.
