The hair_spline are in box mode to avoid slowing down the interface. If you want to see the splines, select hair_spline, right-click and choose Object Properties from the dropdown menu, then uncheck Display as Box. If the fur is not scaled properly, open the tools rollout in the Hair and Fur settings and activate Recomb From Splines, then specify spline_hair. This will resize the fur correctly. If the size is correct, you can delete hair_spline. Before rendering, go to the Rendering - Effects tab, click on Hair and Fur, and select mr prim mode below. For medium and distant views, you can lower it. For those with weaker computers, immediately lower the amount of fur to 100-200 thousand and adjust the thickness of the fur.
