The Douglas DC-8 was a rival of the 707 series. It was developed at the same time and was very similar in design and capabilities. Being one of the first practical jet airliners capable of inter-continental range and a larger capacity, the DC-8 was historic and popular with airlines. The first DC-8 flew in 1957. These aircraft had a good safety record and were used in main airline routes until late in the 1970s.
